This degree provides insight into human resource management and training within the context of organisations at a national and international level. You will study the way in which employee and organisational development are closely related to HR topics such as recruitment, performance appraisal, teamwork and motivation.
The MSc in Human Resource Management and Training will equip you with the professional knowledge and skills to engage critically with theories and practices around training and learning in the workplace and the role of the human resources practitioner. You will develop a critical understanding of the issues and problems associated with implementing practices aimed at enhancing employee performance and organisational competitiveness. Teaching and learning
Teaching
As a distance learning student, you will receive support throughout the course from module tutors and personal tutors.
You will use module study books available electronically via Blackboard, our virtual learning environment. This will give you online access to materials to support each module and discussion forums hosted by module tutors.
You will be invited to attend our Leicester Masterclass held on campus at the University. This week-long programme of lectures, activities and workshops takes place every August/September and is open to students on any School of Business distance learning course at any point in their studies.
Assessment
You will be assessed at the end of each module by a written assignment of 4,000-5,000 words. Your final piece of work, the dissertation, will be 16,000-20,000 words.
Distance Learning
Online learning is an important feature of this course, therefore it is essential that you have reliable, regular access to the internet (preferably with a broadband connection) in order to participate.
As a distance learning student, you will have access to the University Library's electronic service, the Leicester Digital Library, which includes a large number of e-journals and e-books.
If you live close to Leicester you can, of course, visit the Library and the School of Business facilities in person. For UK-based students who wish to use other libraries, we can issue you with a card which allows you to do so. This is a national scheme which allows distance learning students to borrow material from up to three other participating libraries.

If you are a self-financing student and have either:
- completed an undergraduate degree (or PGCE course) at the University of Leicester, or
- completed a Study Abroad or Erasmus study placement at the University of Leicester, or
- completed a postgraduate (Masters) degree at the University of Leicester
...and you are progressing onto a higher level degree, you are entitled to a discount of 20% of the new course fee.
This scholarship is available for:
- taught degrees such as MA, MSc, MRes or LLM and research degrees such as PhD or MPhil
- campus-based degrees and distance learning degrees
- full-time courses and part-time courses
It is not available for PGCE courses or four-year undergraduate Masters's degrees such as MSci, MPhys or MMath.
Your scholarship will be automatically calculated when you apply for your postgraduate course. No separate application form is required.
