Introduction
The Interdisciplinary Engineering (ITDE) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program allows students to develop a unique expertise in emerging areas that may not be covered by traditional departmental degree programs and provides a path for those whose research interests cross engineering disciplines and/or college lines. Graduates with interdisciplinary engineering skill sets are highly sought after by employers, and the Doctor of Philosophy in interdisciplinary engineering poises graduates to become leaders in academic organizations, government, and industry. Examples of previously awarded interdisciplinary topics include environmental engineering and public policy; and engineering and education.
About the program
The College of Engineering at Texas A&M University offers a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary engineering degree online, which delivers the same quality and outcomes as the on-campus program. All distance learning students take the same classes, have the same faculty, and complete the same coursework and exams as those on campus.
This program depends on students being in an environment that enables them to conduct their research remotely.
A suitable environment could include the following non-comprehensive list:
- Staff/research engineers at a national laboratory (such as Sandia National Laboratory in New Mexico) who, as part of their routine work function, ordinarily conduct research and engineering activities from which a scholarly activity can be used to support Ph.D. level research and dissertation.
- Staff/research engineers in industry who, as part of their routine work function, ordinarily conduct research or technology development from which a scholarly activity can be used to support Ph.D. level research and dissertation.

Curriculum
Students must comply with the requirements for the Interdisciplinary Engineering (ITDE) program, outlined in the graduate catalog. Students work with their research advisory committee to identify courses for their degree plan.
- On the degree plan, a total of 96 hours is required beyond the bachelor’s degree; of which is required a minimum of 48 hours of 600/700 level course work (other than 691 and 685 hours). At least 50% of the 48 hours must be in a technical engineering field.
- For students with a master’s degree, a total of 64 hours is required; of which is required a minimum of 24 hours of 600/700 level course work (other than 691 and 685 hours). At least 50% of the 24 hours must be in a technical engineering field.
- Additional courses beyond the minimum will be determined by the student’s chair/committee in consultation with the Director of Interdisciplinary Engineering Programs.
- complete ITDE 710 – Research Lifecycle, MATH 601, STAT 601 (or equivalents).
Must complete and pass:
- A written qualifying exam, with the option to additionally conduct an oral qualifying exam, developed and administered by the student’s committee and chair(s), within 2 semesters of matriculation to the Ph.D. ITDE program.
- The option to exercise an oral exam in addition to the written exam is held by the committee. Written copies of the exam must be approved by the Department Head of Multidisciplinary Engineering before its administration to the student.
- To request a review of the qualifying exam, submit a copy of the exam and the qualifying exam form (signed) to the Department of Multidisciplinary Engineering office.
- The committee may, at their discretion but with approval from the Director of Interdisciplinary Engineering, choose to accept the student’s successful passing of another degree program’s qualifying exam to satisfy this requirement.
- A preliminary exam, composed of a written proposal (to be filed with the Graduate and Professional School and an oral preliminary examination, administered by the student’s committee and chair(s).
- Deadlines for completing the preliminary exam are established by the Graduate and Professional School and must be strictly followed.
- A final exam, composed of a written dissertation and an oral defense of the completed research, administered by the student’s committee and chair(s).
